The Strength of Cinderella

By: Meredith bowman, Perimeter School teacher and drama department director

Cinderella is a timeless classic for a reason: it is a story where dreams become reality, where imagination comes to life, and where seemingly impossible things can happen. But beyond being a celebration of hope, the character of Cinderella is a picture of Christlike love. Despite being treated maliciously by her stepfamily, Cinderella puts Christ’s commands into practice; in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)

I think that in our modern culture, there is a tendency to see Cinderella as weak, passively waiting for a prince to save her from her plight. However, I see great strength in Cinderella! It takes great strength to be so steadfast in your kindness to those who are unkind to you. It takes great resiliency to choose to see the good in the world when the world has not been good to you. It takes great fortitude to continue to believe that impossible things are possible when all hope seems lost. In her response to adversity, Cinderella is a model for us all.

REFLECTIONS FROM THE CAST AND CREW

We asked some of our cast and crew members to reflect on what the show means to them.

JULIA (CINDERELLA): Even though people think that Cinderella is nothing, she finds her worth in who she is in Christ. That’s inspired me to play the part without worrying about what others think, and instead do the show for the glory of God!

ALLIE (STEPSISTER): The stepsisters are themselves completely. They don’t see that they’re crazy and over-the-top. They are a good reminder not to worry what other people think about you and to just be yourself!

CLAIRE (ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER): Cinderella reminds me that even when you don’t feel like you belong somewhere, you can still keep hoping and dreaming.

KATE (GODMOTHER): Even in the most unlikely of circumstances, miracles can happen, and there can always be a bright side to any situation!

We are excited to share this story with you, and we hope that it will inspire you the way that it has inspired us!
