Mother-Son Adventure: Encourage One Another and Build Each Other Up

By: Amy Adkison, Perimeter School mom

I know that all of you mamas can feel it. Time with our children passes far too quickly, every year faster and faster, and we just want to store up every minute and cherish every memory. We do our best to have intentional time with our kids. We study them, try to find the activities that fill them up, and sometimes take a big gulp and participate in things that we typically never would - just to see them smile!

Mother-son Adventure

I have the privilege of having both a son and a daughter, and I love spending time with them!

With my daughter, it just seems easy; she may help me cook or snuggle in to watch a movie or even just take a walk with me. I am so thankful for my precious relationship with her!

With my son, as he gets older, time together seems even more important, but also, it’s a challenge! Thankfully, we are quickly approaching one of our favorite days of the year: Mother-Son Adventure.

My son and I have participated in this event every opportunity we have had (minus COVID years and rainouts). And this year feels extra special to me; it is his eighth grade year.

While I know that it will not be our last time spending one-on-one time together, I am also keenly aware that finding that special, memory-making, intentional time is becoming harder and harder. I am so thankful that our school carves out a day to be intentional with our boys.

encourage one another

This year at Mother-Son Adventure, we are focusing on 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Encourage one another and build each other up…”.

Some of my favorite memories from our past eight Mother-Son events come from watching the moms and sons that don’t love ropes courses or don’t love heights. They take tiny steps of faith, are encouraged by their covenant community, and are loved even more for their efforts.

I have been astonished at the strength and courage of some mamas who, at the beginning of the day, said, “I can’t do that!” … and are then encouraged by the Sojourn staff to push themselves, ever so slightly, past their comfort zones. And they end the day with the admiration of their adoring son who says, “My mom is so brave!”

I love that not only is my relationship with my son stretched and deepened at Mother-Son Adventure but my relationship with our covenant community is richer for the times we have worked together and stretched ourselves on the ropes course.

and build each other up

And maybe ropes courses aren’t your “thing,” and maybe they aren’t your son’s “thing” - but teaching our children, especially our boys, to be brave, have courage, and encourage others should be all of our “things.”

Find what brings your son joy! Maybe it’s as simple as sitting down one afternoon and trying to play Minecraft with him, throwing the baseball, or creating something together with your hands. It won’t be perfect; you will likely mess up - but you will have entered his world and shared time, encouragement, and probably some laughter.

I can’t wait to hear the stories of how your boys encouraged you, how other moms encouraged your boys, and how you built each other up as a covenant community.

Mother-Son Adventure is Saturday, September 25! Moms of Perimeter School boys, this is an adventure you won’t want to miss! Go to Family Portal > Web Forms > Mother-Son Adventure for more information and to register by Wednesday, September 15.
