Impact for Eternity
By: CLINT FISHER, DEAN OF STUDENTS AND FAMILIES
At Perimeter School, our mission is to partner with believing parents to provide a strong academic foundation while discipling students to think biblically and live redemptively.
Research shows that a large percentage of children walk away from the faith once they reach their twenties. With this in mind, what can we do to put our children in the best possible place to remain in the faith?
WHAT WE CAN DO
There are two factors that can flip that statistic…
If children grow up in a home where God’s word, promises, stories, and faithfulness are shared often and as part of the daily rhythms of family life.
If children have two to four adults outside the home sharing the same stories of God’s love and faithfulness.
We find that nearly 90% of children with these two factors present remain in the faith.
Of course, this is not a promise that your children will walk with God. That is the work of God and His Spirit. However, wisdom does provide insight into what we can do in partnership with God, and Perimeter School wants to help in two ways…
First, we want to be those other voices outside the home that speak God’s promises and hope into the lives of your children. Second, we want to equip you to take small steps in your home that have significant returns. Parents have the strongest voices in their children’s lives, and we want every parent to feel equipped to use that voice to tell the next generation of God’s faithfulness.
IMPACT FOR ETERNITY
This year, we are going to provide parents with many different tools for leading family devotions. We will start with a ten-second, “you can’t fail” devotion. The only way to fail at this devotion is not to do it. It really is that simple.
There will be videos coming out in the next few weeks explaining more and even modeling how to do this. And we will continue to provide short videos throughout the year that will add more skills to this basic devotion. These skills will allow us as parents to develop the fundamental habit of having family devotions while having the freedom to go deeper to answer questions or keep it simple when life is hectic.
It is seldom a single point or event that provides life’s trajectory. More often, it is daily, repetitive choices.
If you have been having family devotions for years or if you have never led one, this first, fail-safe devotion model is an essential tool to have in your tool belt. I want to challenge every parent to do this, trusting God to change both your life and the lives of your children for eternity.
