Alumni Spotlight: Melanie Hughes
By: Melanie Hughes, PERIMETER SCHOOL alum
We recently caught up with several of our Perimeter School alumni, and we are excited to share with you how Perimeter School has influenced their stories and how God is using them for kingdom impact.
Our next alumni spotlight is Melanie Hughes, Perimeter School Class of 2012.
What do you do? Where do you live?
I live in Boston, Massachusetts where I am pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Screenwriting at Boston University.
How Did your time at Perimeter School influencE who you are and what you do today?
I look back at my time at Perimeter School as not only a solid and faithful foundation for my faith and sound theology but also for being a special place that has cultivated so many of my dearest friendships.
As someone who values critical thinking, curiosity, and wonder, I believe Perimeter School helped ground me in biblical truth before allowing me to consider things on a deeper, more challenging level.
Further, I think friendship is one of the kindest and most transformational gifts the Lord gives us. Because of Perimeter School, I met some of my most cherished friends of today back when they were in diapers or playing flag football during recess.
As I've gotten older, I am continuously thankful for the seeds that Perimeter School planted and watered in my life.
"If it weren't for Perimeter School, I wouldn't know . . .”
If it weren't for Perimeter School, I wouldn't know the Word of God in such an expansive and steadfast way. In elementary and middle school, we were taught and engaged with stories from the Old and New Testament, memorized and studied various passages of scripture and books of the Bible, and even debated differing complex theological interpretations.
Many years later, I still remember many of these classes, assignments, and studies and have become increasingly grateful for a foundation that still stands with strength against the dark and tumultuous storms of life.
In what ways is the work you are doing now spiritually and culturally Significant?
My current work in writing and film/tv hopes to illuminate the beauty of God's creation while working with people from every background and cherishing the different attributes of our Creator in each. I am incredibly thankful to work with people from all walks of life and beliefs and engage with the diverse world around me as that is an example of Jesus that I think is so powerful and challenging in the best ways.
I hope that the same peace, light, and truth my relationship with Jesus has colored my life with will be brought into each of the spaces I walk into with humility and expectancy.
God shows up in our messy places and transforms ordinary moments into holy ones.
