The Gift of Music

I’m so thankful He chose to bless us with this universal language.

By: Lisa Langston, Music Teacher

For the past 25 years, I have had the immense honor of guiding the students at Perimeter School in their appreciation and enjoyment of music. As I reflect on these years and on the 16 years I spent teaching in public school before that, I am filled with gratitude.

I chose this career because I’ve loved music my entire life. I played the piano and clarinet, served as drum major in my high school band, and sang in my church youth choir. When I went to college, I never considered any other major. Once I began teaching elementary school, I also discovered my love for working with children. I feel so blessed that God led me to a job I have truly enjoyed.

My teaching philosophy is simple: 100% of ALL people can enjoy music on some level. My goal has always been to introduce children to this incredible gift, help them find joy in it, and use whatever gifts God has given them to glorify Him.

Recently, I asked some of my students to share what music means to them personally, and I received such wonderful and heartwarming responses!

“Helps with creativity”

“Gets you in the vibe”

“You can turn a Bible verse into a song to help you learn.”

“Music helps people know God better.”

“Playing games like music baseball/jeopardy”

“Cheers me up”

“Helps me express myself “

“The emotion”

“The energy”

“Music makes me feel good.”

“We love chances to dance and sing so that we can glorify God!”

“I love music because of the amazing different sounds it can make.”

“Music takes me out of reality.”

“Learning about history, musicians, and composers”

“Playing instruments!”

“Playing and singing worship songs makes me so happy.”

“Music gets all your stress out!”

“Music gets everyone included and lets us have fun.”

“Honoring the veterans with our music”

“Doing the music programs!”

(So many kids wrote this.) Having just completed a week of music programs, this one especially makes me happy. Watching the students perform for their parents is just the best!

As I approach retirement, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who have supported me over the years - with kind words and touching stories about the impact music has had on them and their children at Perimeter School. Please know that I treasure every one of those moments in my heart.

God could have created a beautiful world without music, but I can’t even imagine it! Can you? I’m so thankful He chose to bless us with this universal language. My prayer is that each of you continues to enjoy it to the fullest!
