The Final Countdown
by: Rebecca Little, Elementary School principal
Can you believe it? May is here and the countdown is on! Some of us are jumping for joy and may have already packed suitcases for a summer vacation, while others are tightly buckling their seatbelts for the craziness this month can bring. Whether you fall at either end of this spectrum or somewhere in the middle, may I suggest a few ideas to keep May in perspective, while staying engaged and fruitful until the end.
KEEP OUR EYES ON JESUS
First and foremost, we must keep our eyes on Jesus! In the busyness we all encounter this month, the one area we cannot let slide is our focus on Him. Our eyes and minds can quickly drift when life is hectic and full of demands. When this happens, there can be a frenzy in our hearts rather than a calm and peaceful sense of knowing that God’s grace is sufficient for the day in which we are living (2 Corinthians 12:9). When I find myself spinning, hurried, and out of control, the chorus from a hymn by Helen Howarth Lemmel comes to mind, and the words bring me back to Jesus.
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus - Hillsong Worship
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things on earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
Just like a spinning ballet dancer who must find a focal point to keep her balance, we must do the same. That focal point is the only one that can satisfy, Jesus.
take time for reflection
Take some time to reflect on the lessons learned this year. Of course, your children have learned academic lessons, but what other character-building lessons have they learned? Where have they grown spiritually? At the dinner table one evening, “light a candle” and share together. Share where you have seen growth and maturity in your children. Ask what verse from the school verses meant the most to them. Let us not let the year end without reflecting on God’s goodness and the lessons we have learned.
finish strong
There is still work to be done! May we commit to encouraging each other to persevere until the end. As we are all aware, our children often emulate the atmosphere both spoken and unspoken that they sense from us. Pray for a positive and peaceful demeanor that is contagious in your home and with others.
Celebrate
On May 6, we as a covenant body will gather for our final Campus Meeting of the year. We will worship, learn, and fellowship together and give God the praise for the wonderful things He has done this year. Teacher Appreciation Week, Honors Day, Field Day, Talent Show, and Graduation will soon follow to wrap up this 40th year of Perimeter School!
Jesus came in the still and calm of the night.
